Welcome to the Bicycle Barn

Our approach to life and cycling is the same: Live it. Love it. Ride it.

Whether you’re picking out your first bike or you’ve been cycling for years—you are welcome. Our goal is to help you feel comfortable and confident on two wheels.

Serving the Walla Walla Valley Since 1975

The Bicycle Barn and our love of cycling have deep familial roots. The business was established in 1975, but John, Dorothy, and their son Greg Knowles bought it from its founders in 1985.

In 1992, Greg stepped in full-time to help grow the business, but it was also a move to support his family. Back then, it was common to see his two kids running around the store, polishing bikes, doing homework, or even practicing for piano (yup, there used to be a piano in the office!). This is a tradition that continues today, and a point of pride for our family business.

Originally just the front showroom, the footprint expanded in 1992 to the adjacent building, which allowed inventory and services to grow significantly. In 1998, a fire nearly devasted the building and the business. Thanks to a supportive customer base, not to mention hundreds of hours of volunteered work from friends and family, we were able to rebuild and continue serving the community we love.

Greg's nephew Kevin Thonney joined the Bicycle Barn full-time in 2011, and brought with him a passion for the cycling community and bike racing scene. You'll find him at racing events (mostly gravel and XC) all around the PNW, almost always joined by his wife and three kids. His favorite part of cycling is his ability to share it with family, whether that's a family-friendly bike race or a cruise around town.

A business doesn't last 50 years by chance. For more than 30 years, our Service Department has been led by Tim Hulce. From his master mechanic skills to a BMX racing career to the dozens of young mechanics he's trained over the years, Tim has been a steady pillar for the Bicycle Barn.

“What isn’t there to like about the cycling industry and culture? I like it all — being outside, meeting people, forming relationships, towing your kids around.”

We have tried to keep much the same over the years: a passion for cycling, a focus on customer service, and unwavering support for our community. But, with time comes change. By 2022, Kevin's role had grown to both store manager and business owner as Greg gradually stepped into (partial) retirement. Seeking a family-centric life shift of his own, Greg's son Kyler stepped into the Bicycle Barn on a part-time basis in 2025.

We're proud of what we've built over these 50 years - the people, the bikes, the culture - and we plan to do it for another 50. Come on in and let's take a ride. After all, life's good on two wheels.

Cycling Community

We love sharing our passion for cycling and Walla Walla with our customers. Our team is comprised of competitive cyclists and recreational riders. When we’re not helping you have the best cycling experience possible, you’ll find us cruising around the Walla Walla countryside or to our favorite ice cream shop.

Whether it’s giving your bike a repair service or leading a local ride, we love helping our community enjoy life on a bike.

We are also continually working with our local government and tourism organizations to make Walla Walla a premier cycling destination. We have a large menu of ride suggestions for road, gravel, and mountain bike rides. Come into the store to get the latest recommendations or route conditions.
